History

In December 1960, a wheat field in southeast Lincoln was purchased by the Evangelical United Brethern Church of Nebraska with hopes of building a church. In January 1963, interested families from the three Lincoln EUB churches were called together to discuss their possible involvement in creating a new church. The first pastor, Rev. Donald C. Miller, was appointed to gather a congregation. On January 4, 1964, the first service of worship was held with 92 persons in attendance.

In April 1968, the EUB denomination merged with the Methodist denomination to become the United Methodist Church. At the five year mark, South Gate’s membership was 199. Over the years, the church has grown and matured in many directions with missions being a high priority.

The first women’s group, Women’s Society of Christian Service, evolved into the United Methodist Women and now United Women in Faith. They continue to be active in study and mission.

Music has always been important to South Gate. We currently have three vocal and one handbell choir with participants from elementary age to senior adults.
