General Conference 2019 and into the Future

A selection of references gathered for the people of South Gate UMC Lincoln

by Rev. Stephanie Ahlschwede

United Methodists meet every four years to review and establish the rules and policies of our church. This body, called General Conference, met in February for a special called meeting to address the topic of human sexuality. The changes within our denomination that began there will continue for some time; I have scheduled monthly informal conversations during the Sunday School hour regarding the UMC and where we might be headed, and offer the following resources and links for those of you who would like to dig deeper.  A good source of United Methodist News is our own news service, UMNS. You can find their website here  https://www.umnews.org/

UMNS is one of the ministries of United Methodist Communications. Their summary page of General Conference 2019 includes videos, interviews, photo albums and articles. You can find it here: http://www.umc.org/topics/general-conference-2019-special-session

Our Administrative Council has discussed both the outcome of General Conference and the accompanying news coverage, and I think it is fair to say that we have a concern that our membership and visitors all know that we are committed to a true welcome for all who enter our church and a specific welcome to LGBTQ people. We’ve asked a working group to consider whether becoming a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network would be a good fit for our congregation. After study and consideration, they will bring a proposal to Ad Council for consideration. You can read more about RMN here: https://rmnetwork.org/

Individuals can also join RMN; if you feel moved to do so the information is at the same link.

For those of you who use twitter and facebook, the above sources are all available on both of these social media formats; clicking “follow” or “like” will result in the news showing up in your life rather than you seeking it out. If it gets to be too much, you opt to unfollow/like.
